Lessons of Mumbai Terror attack for Masses
Mumbai terror outrage of masses opposing politicians, government machinery, opposition parties brought governments over the corner as people would not take one bit of meddling with internal security from now on. Both Central and State government of Maharashtra were on the target as the mandate accused them of utter failure in delivery. Despite ample warnings and threats, our leaders were busy in their dirty politiking, nothing concrete on the internal security except issuing statements was done, the result: rampant and unabated terrorist attacks all over the country and Mumbai.Peace loving Indian masses (a bit too tolerant), this time stood up to dictate terms rather than accepting the grave situation. They have made it amply clear that ‘Enough is Enough’. This time INDIA demanded from inactive and insensitive politicians, ACTION. Something hard and fast to STOP terrorism in our country. The insolent politicians received a befitting bashing, both from public and media.Public action managed to press priorities in the government, though several political and bureaucratic heads are yet to roll. Making mockery of its own, the union government has once again sent a list of most wanted terrorists to bad neighbor Pakistan. Hoping to get these dreaded criminals this time. Though the previous requisition sent more than four years ago, is still pending with Pak. The Government has to answer why it was not pursued during the last four years? Surprisingly, our politicians have a queer sense of humor as they requested ISI chief to help in Mumbai terror investigations. GOI is claiming that ISI is involved in the attacks, then why invite terrorist's chief. Did India want to arrest the guest? The lethargic Indian authorities also tried a futile exercise by requesting Pak authorities to hand over these dreaded terrorists to India. Are we not capable of organizing MISSION ANTEBE or do we really believe that our agencies are incapable and unworthy of safe guarding Indian boundaries?
Talking of the need of the hour, India should now garner maximum support from international powers and peace keeping agencies like US, Russia, EU and UNO. A collective plan for eradication of terrorism should be chalked out in black and white to combat global terrorism. Meanwhile internal security should strictly be our internal matter. A clear cut security strategy must be in place and all efforts to get support should be made according to that strategy. Alternative action plans should be ready beforehand. We have to find ways to keep the four walls of our house safe. No matter what may come, we should not stare at other countries to help keep our house safe. Our security forces need to be given lessons for unity and mutual coordination. They should not be left fighting their own battles their way. Ground, Sea and Air transport security (security at Sea Coasts, Airports, Railway stations and Bus Stands) should be handed over to a single empowered nodal agency that could manage and handle affairs related to security. At least such agencies should be imparted guerrilla warfare training and also be given modern and hi-quality gear. Not like ATS equipment where the bullet proof jackets fail and those wearing it are killed in Mumbai terror attacks. Not to forget, even their vehicles should be specially equipped and fast. The seriousness and co-ordination of the authorities in handling the situation becomes evident from the fact that only ordinary BEST buses could be provided to the NSG Commandos that too after hours of waiting. Special cells must be deployed to curb smuggling across all borders as their routes are easy and prove to be safe havens to be exploited for terrorist activities. Anybody (lobby) who opposes such action must be cornered and dealt with strongly. We have yet to use the word `Treason' in our country. It is now time to study lapses fast and officials from Top to bottom, who are found guilty of slackness in performing duty, guilty of corruption in purchase of sub-standard equipment etc. must be thrown behind bars and charged with treason.
The public dealing departments of the Central and State Governments like Municipal bodies, RTO, Police, Electricity boards/Companies, railways should be made free of corruption. Instead of making big announcements, the Government should start from the basics. A team of leading Security and defence experts should be formed to strengthen the security apparatus and frame an effective foreign policy. The job of home security must be entrusted to some security expert. Our State Government and administration also has to learn a lot from the incident and at least start acting now. It is the responsibility of the Government to provide it’s citizens such atmosphere where they can feel safe and secure. The Central and State Governments should be ready to take hard bold decisions. The general public should also ask some serious questions to itself and learn a few lessons as well. If we want a responsible Government, we (public) must also have to be responsible.
1. It also needs intriguing for masses weather they want to ignore their franchise to vote and continue being ruled by corrupt and lame governments or realize the power of their vote and elect educated and judicious personalities to the Parliament. It is ironical but true that it is the educated elite voter that seems to be most passive and indifferent; even uninclined to go to polling booth. It is often heard that they (politicians) are all same; whom to choose? Agreed, options are limited. But, is it not like like running away from the responsibility or shrugging it off if educated people refuse to vote? In addition to being active in constituency works, the honesty, character and integrity of the candidate must be the criteria to be considered before giving them support. The personality of the candidate must be given preference rather than religion, caste or party one belongs to. We must realise the fact that our ignorance and apathy is helping criminals, illiterates and musclemen reach Parliament. This affects each citizen of the country and so the people of India need to learn the power of their single vote.2. We will have to take a vow that we will not succumb to demands of bribery from authorities/officials for daily chores like getting driving license, Birth-death registration, Gas Cylinder refills, passports etc.
3. We should show better awareness for the happenings in the surroundings and stop being remaining unconcerned. We will have to perform the role of responsible citizens.
4. We should take a vow that ( by part of our duty or otherwise) if ever we are entrusted to spend public money we would do it in just, fair and transparent manner without unjust favour to anybody, on the intended project only and without compromising on the quality.
I have no doubt that if countrymen take a pledge to work together, the situation will certainly improve. If public becomes aware and united, the Government machinery can be pressurised to perform & deliver the goods, and the country would progress while dealing effectively with all challenges confronting it.
